Sustainable Wood Materials
WPS Home : Research : Research Centers & Initiatives : Sustainable Wood Materials
The Department of Wood & Paper Science at NC State (WPS) is pioneering new technologies and products related to sustainable wood materials research. Current efforts are focusing on the use of environmentally friendly, non-woven materials such as forest biomaterials, other bio-component fibers and transgenic aspen as base materials for construction fiberboard. By using natural and synthetic fibers that are typically longer than most wood fibers, we are able to explore alternative ways to build internal bond strength without the use of toxic petroleum-based adhesives. Such methods as needle punching, which interweaves fibers, are producing good results and may one day lead to a new generation of environmentally friendly construction materials.
