International Study Opportunities
Students within the Department of Wood & Paper Science at NC State (WPS) are encouraged to pursue global areas of study by participating in international academic programs. These programs offer a wide range of study opportunities:
- Special study abroad trips are often offered, such as a recent Paper Science & Engineering trip to China, which allowed 22 WPS students majoring in Paper Science & Engineering to spend two weeks touring paper mills across China. Dr. Hou-min Chang, a retired professor in our paper science program at NC State and a TAPPI Fellow, arranged the mill visits. You can read more about the China trip on a special blog set up to allow students to share their experiences.
- Academic partnerships are maintained by WPS faculty and graduate students with colleagues from universities in other countries, including Nanjing Forestry University, home to one of the larger paper science and engineering programs in China; the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), which operates main campuses in Alnarp, Skara, Uppsala and Umeå, Sweden; the University of the Sunshine Coast, located in Queensland, Australia; the Universidad de Concepcion in Chile; Helsinki University of Technology (TKK), in Finland, which allows WPS students to study abroad for a semester taking major-specific classes at TKK while paying tuition and room and board at NCSU; and five universities in China.
- An arrangement with the Peace Corps called the Masters International Program, allows students working toward advanced degrees in certain areas to receive academic credit for their Peace Corps service.
- International classes conducted in other countries by WPS faculty include month-long summer courses, spring break courses and short-term seminars. The department is developing their next trip for May 2009, and is considering visiting South America.
- Undergraduate internships are often available in other countries, allow summer and semester long interns to work on the job while experiencing other cultures. Read more about student experiences working for Nippon Paper in Tokyo, Japan and International Paper in Sallait, France.

- The NC State Grad School International provides information for international students and on international programs sponsored by the NC State University Graduate School. In addition, the Grad School maintains an Office of International Programs, which offers provides a variety of services.
- Visit our International Programs at NC State website for more information on other international academic opportunities.
- Other study abroad opportunities are available through NC State’s Study Abroad Office.
