Internships & Co-Ops
WPS Home : For Future Undergrads : Internships & Co-Ops
As could be expected from a program founded, in part, to meet the needs of two of North Carolina’s most important industries, the Wood & Paper Science program at NC State encourages students to take part in co-op arrangements and internships with participating companies. Not only do these experiences help students earn income to offset their educational expenses, they expose students to real-world challenges and help them hone their skills and career interests. Most of all, this professional experience can be worth its weight in gold when it comes to obtaining a permanent job.
Internships are usually offered during the summer and are about three months in duration. Because no regular course work is missed, internships are easy for students to include in their academic schedule. Co-ops take place during the semester, and the student typically leaves NC State for a temporary period of time. If a student is able to combine a summer internship with a semester co-op, the overall experience can last up to 8 months in duration. This means the student will miss certain scheduled courses and will need to work with his or her advisor to develop an alternate plan of study that minimizes delays and course conflicts. Some students may need to take courses in summer school to make up for being away during the semester. Co-ops are set up through the NC State Co-Operative Education Program.
