Health Services

WPS Home : For Current Students : Health Services

Students in the Department of Wood & Paper Science at NC State have access to a variety of services that help them stay in good health and deal with stress or other special situations:

  • Student Health Services  are available for all full-time students. Services offered include medical examinations, treatment of illness and injuries, monitoring and management of chronic health conditions, routine women’s healthcare, allergy and flu shots, immunizations,  info on health requirements for international travel, most diagnostic laboratory and radiology services, physical therapy and more.
  • The NC State Women’s Center offers a range of programs and services revolving around providing crisis response and referral to resources for gender-based violence, particularly sexual assault.
  • The NC State Counseling Center provides counseling for students experiencing personal, academic or vocational problems. Psychological assessment and psychiatric consultation are also available. Services are primarily short-term in nature. Referrals to other professionals and community agencies are made as appropriate. Strict confidentiality is assured. Many services are free to currently enrolled NC State students.
  • Academic skills counseling is available to students experiencing academic difficulties. These services complement those provided by departmental advisors. Students can meet individually with a counselor and learn strategies to help them become better students. Issues addressed might include semester withdrawal requests, alternative readmission evaluations, poor grades, test anxiety, learning disabilities, dissertation support, study skills and others issues. Workshops on a variety of academic topics are also offered through this program.
  • Mental health consultation services are available for students seeking the advice of a trained professional about problems that are interfering with their personal growth and academic achievement. Personal counseling is provided to individuals or couples to help them deal with a wide variety of problems, including anxiety, depression, relationship issues and substance abuse. Parents worried about a son or daughter, or students concerned about a roommate, can also consult with a staff member at the Counseling Center and develop ideas for dealing effectively with the situation.
  • Personal safety situations, including sexual assault and other special circumstances are discussed in detail in the WPS student handbooks. Please contact Pat Hill for a copy of the Undergraduate Student Handbook or Melissa Rabil for a copy of the WPS Graduate Student handbook.
