Who We Are

The Department of Wood & Paper Science (WPS) is part of NC State University‘s College of Natural Resources (CNR). We are located in Raleigh, North Carolina and headquartered on-campus in the Roberston Pulp and Paper Laboratory, Hodges Wood Products Laboratory and Biltmore Hall. Our activities include teaching, research, extension programs, continuing education, and technical services that benefit the paper and pulp, wood products and housing, and biomaterials and bioenergy industries. Many of our major research and extension initiatives are interdisciplinary in nature and take advantage of faculty expertise from other areas within CNR, across NC State and around the world. We also collaborate with the faculty of the College of Engineering and other programs at NC State when structuring undergraduate and graduate academic programs in various areas of paper science and engineering, of wood products, and forest biomaterials and bioenergy.

WPS is currently home to 21 full-time faculty, 3 exceptionally active adjunct faculty, 20 staff members and research associates, more than 150 undergraduate students and 30 graduate students. The faculty is recognized internationally and committed to providing students with an education that combines an understanding of theoretical principles with the practical skills that will prepare them for successful careers as technical, scientific and management leaders in their industries. We have over 2,000 alumni globally, including many who are now the CEO’s, senior executives or owners of major wood products and paper and pulp companies.

Our on-campus facilities include classrooms, laboratories, libraries, special research collections and state-of-the-art research and testing facilities, including the Robertson Paper & Pulp Testing Laboratory with the fully functioned reduced scale Baby Wolfpack pilot paper plant and the Hodges Wood Products Laboratory, a 21,000 sq. foot facility that supports wood products production and testing as well as research into the physical and mechanical properties of wood, and the Forest Biomaterials and Bioenergy Laboratories.
