The College of Natural Resources' birth in 1929 is rooted in the traditions of the Biltmore School of Forestry in Asheville and the Mont Alto Forestry School in Pennsylvania - the nation's first forestry school.
When that program was eliminated, NC State absorbed much of its faculty, students and groundbreaking practices, making NC State heir to the oldest forestry programs in the nation. Since its beginnings, that forestry program -which was to become the College of Natural Resources we know today - has grown steadily in scope and reach to reflect evolving industry needs and environmental concerns.
A review of our remarkable history is a timeline of breakthroughs in forestry and environmental resources; wood and paper science; and park, recreation, tourism & and sport management, all achieved by many of natural resource's greatest academic and research pioneers. It is also a testament to the power of partnerships between the academic, industry, non-profit and government communities.
