The NCSU - Cooperative Tree Improvement Program continues to be a leader and innovator in tree improvement and forest genetics, building upon a history of over 50 years of research. We have amassed an enormous amount of genetic data on thousands of loblolly pine selections. Through decades of breeding efforts, and constantly looking for ways to incorporate new technologies, we have been able to make impressive gains in each generation of breeding.
The Cooperative’s new Contributing Membership is designed for consulting firms, small to medium forest products companies, TIMOs, REITs, nurseries, and landowners who want to have the best knowledge possible about what loblolly pine genetics to plant. The fee that a Contributing Member pays is based upon the number of acres that are being established with genetic material from the NC State Tree Improvement Cooperative. For $2.50 per planted acre, Contributing Members have access to the Cooperative’s performance data base (breeding values of all the families available from the Cooperative). With this knowledge, landowners are fully-informed customers and can be assured of obtaining the best genetic material possible for their land. Knowledge about what loblolly pine genotypes a landowner should be purchasing is extremely valuable. Our conservative estimates are that by simply purchasing the very good or outstanding genotypes available from seedling vendors, NPVs of $50 to $250 per acre can be easily realized, depending on the site and the silvicultural system employed. For more information about the economic gains from knowledge of genetic materials, please see resources on our Landowners page.
