PRTM’s unique undergraduate curriculum combines relevant classes with hands-on field experience. The wisdom and guidance of PRTM’s professional staff and faculty combine with these activities to both inspire and prepare students for a professional career based on one of three undergraduate degrees. Degrees are offered in Parks, Recreation & Tourism Management, Professional Golf Management and Sport Management. Students may also minor in Parks Recreation and Tourism Management. Students who can solve problems, possess planning skills and are people-oriented typically excel in PRTM.
Fieldwork
In addition to coursework, fieldwork projects and various Service Learning opportunities introduce undergraduates to potential career settings and let them plan, implement and evaluate programs for a variety of audiences with a range of special needs. Students may work in parks, public and commercial recreation facilities, sport and country clubs, corporate sport and fitness facilities, historic sites, YM/YWCA’s, convention centers, golf courses and other sports facilities. In addition, frequent student trips to state, city and county parks and forests enhance instruction in outdoor recreation management, while students may elect to participate in a week-long national consortium with professional experts, students and faculty from other universities each year. Typically, undergraduates also intern with an organization of their choice each summer.
Financial Assistance
PRTM helps undergraduates find both full-time summer and part-time job placement and co-op positions. The department also provides financial assistance through various foundation-supported scholarships.
