Nationally, tourism is a multi-billion dollar business.  In 2007, tourism brought over $157 Billion to the Southern USA in 2007, and continues to be North Carolina's largest service industry.

Whether the attraction is rooted in culture, recreation, nature, heritage, or sports; tourism plays a big role in growing healthy communities. It can mean jobs, revenue, and even survival for some communities - particularly in rural communities.

Why does it matter?
In order for communities and local decision makers to fully benefit from tourism as an economic resource, research is needed to properly identify potential and provide up-to-date forecasts.  Research and proper planning help to grow sustainable communities with vibrant economies and a healthy and prosperous tomorrow.
