Education and Training

  • M. of Natural Resources, NC State University. Major: Natural Resources, emphasis - Spatial Information Science. Minor: Landscape Architecture, 1997.
  • B.Sc., NC State University. Major: Recreation Resources Administration, emphasis - Program Management, 1988.
  • Current Ph.D. student in PRTM Department: research focus on public participatory geographic information systems (PPGIS) for natural resource management, planning and the stakeholder communication process.
  • Certification: Geographic Information Professional (GISP)

Research Interests

  • Spatial database development for natural and cultural resource inventory and management
  • Use of spatial information technology to improve workflow efficiency
  • Application of knowledge, skills and experience in the areas community engagement, park planning and natural resource management

Outreach, Extension & Instructional Activities

Current GIST projects:

  • Wake County Advocates for Health in Action (AHA) – community asset map for web access
  • National Park Service – Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail – spatial database development and data access through web browser

Current Recreation Resources Service (RRS) Assistance:

  • Engage with local communities across NC to provide park planning assistance: completed projects for over 40 NC communities.  Recent projects include Fayetteville-Cumberland, Currituck County and the Town of Mills River.

 

  • Director, Supervisors’ Management School (SMS) –Guide 11-member Board of Regents in curriculum development and instruction for the two year professional development certificate program.  SMS is offered through PRTM at the National Training Center (Oglebay – Wheeling, WV) each November.   • NCSU Outstanding Extension Service Award, 2001-2002 – College of Natural Resources: in recognition of dedication and demonstrated achievements in serving the people of North Carolina.
  • NCSU College of Natural Resources University Award for Excellence, 2001: for distinguished and dedicated service to the college and university.

Student

  • American Academy for Park & Recreation Administration (AAPRA) National Best Student Paper Award: awarded every three years in recognition of master's thesis or undergraduate paper which contributes most to the scholarly literature and improved practice of park and recreation administration.
  • North Carolina Recreators Foundation Fletcher Graduate Scholarship: Selected among graduate students statewide for commitment to the profession for outstanding achievements as a master's student.
  • Thomas I. Hines Award: for leadership, scholarship and active involvement in the recreation field. Presented by the NCSU Department of Recreation Resources Administration to outstanding seniors in the undergraduate program
  • Rho Phi Lambda: selected for membership in honorary Professional Parks & Recreation Fraternity
