Nationally Certified Parks & Recreation Professional (CPRP) by the National Recreation and Parks Assoc. Member - NC Recreation and Parks Society.

Shields has been employed in a variety of positions by the City of Raleigh Parks & Recreation Department beginning in 1973 including Supervisor of Special Populations Programs and Outdoor Accessibility Specialist. She currently serves as Assistant Training and Development Manager. Shields worked as a regional consultant for the NC State Recreation Resource Service from 1991-1994.

Shields has been a visiting instructor in the North Carolina State Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism Management since 1991 teaching primarily in the area of Inclusion. She teaches PRT 238 -Inclusive Recreation at NC State and has taught RECR70-Special Population at UNC-Chapel Hill.
