Restoring the Neuse

River scene

Dr. Jim Gregory serves as a technical advisor to a statewide task force formed to develop guidelines for repairing the Neuse River.

Gregory chairs a subcommittee that developed rules for forestry management along the banks of the Neuse, provided technical input on the effects of various forestry and hydrology techniques on water quality and developed field metholodgy guidelines during the restoration’s implementation stage.

By helping determine where regulations were most needed along the Neuse, he helped focus efforts on where they would do the most good and accelerated the Neuse River’s eventually successful return to health.

Gregory continues to work with the North Carolina Division of Water Quality, teaching a training and certification course for applying the idenitified methodology in similar areas. Training is also being offered to the general public, private landowners and evironmental professionals through NC State’s Forestry and Environmental Outreach Program.

Promo Area

Service projects and hands-on activities are at the core of our watershed hydrology program: students learn by going out into the field and helping local communities and government agencies tackle their water quality challenges.
