FER Home : Scholarships and Research Funding : Gunnar Nicholson Scholarship

Introduction

Swedish students are invited to apply for fellowships supporting doctoral study in forest genetics and forest management in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources (FER) , College of Natural Resources, at North Carolina State University (NCSU), in Raleigh, North Carolina. Nicholson Fellows are prepared for international careers through work on cutting edge issues ranging from conservation of genetic diversity in the tropics to biotechnology applications in northern plantations.

Nicholson Fellowships provide full support for up to five years of study towards a PhD in the NCSU Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources. This includes:

Nicholson fellows will study towards a PhD in Forestry and can pursue any disciplinary or geographic focus, as long as program of study includes forest genetics and forest management.  Most doctoral students spend at least two years in residence at NCSU to complete coursework for their degrees. Research may be conducted in Sweden, the US, or other parts of the world where NCSU faculty have research projects. Fellowship recipients are eligible to apply for up to $15,000 in research funds.

North Carolina State University has one of the largest and most comprehensive forestry programs in the USA. The Department is a recognized leader in sustainable forest management in the southeastern US, the tropics and sub-tropics of Latin America, Asia, and Africa. Research areas related to forest genetics and management include intensive plantation management, tree improvement and propagation, biotechnology, and conservation of genetic diversity.

Requirements

Qualifications for the Nicholson Fellowship:

The fellowship may begin in August or January of any year.  Please visit the NCSU Graduate School Application for the online application.  Completed applications must be received by the NCSU Graduate School by March 1 for fall admission and by July 15 for spring admission. Note that the GRE and TOEFL are only offered a few times per year in Sweden, so it is important to register for these well before the application deadlines. Please visit the ETS website to schedule the GRE and TOEFL.  Click here for upcoming dates in Sweden.

Departments that offer a graduate program, including FER, are affiliated with NC State’s Graduate School. The Graduate School maintains admission standards and exercises control over all graduate degree programs. Graduate students in FER are actually admitted to the University through NCSU’s Graduate School to work on a degree program in a specific department. Faculty in the specific departments review applications and make recommendations to the Graduate School regarding the admission of applicants to their departments. Please visit FER Admissions for more information about the department's admission procedures.  Additional information is also available on the Department of Forestry & Environmental Resources webpage.

Swedish students who are interested in details may wish to read documents prepared by previous Swedish students on the Nicholson fellowship.
