International Clubs & Organizations

FER Home : International : International Clubs & Organizations

Most FER students or faculty members pursuing a global area of study belong to the International Society of Tropical Foresters or other peer and industry organizations devoted to various aspects of worldwide forestry and natural resources management.

Visiting their websites can provide you with more information on international forestry and environmental resources topics:

The International Society of Tropical Foresters (ISTF) is a nonprofit organization formed in the 1950s out of a worldwide concern for the fate of tropical and subtropical forests, ISTF is committed to the protection, wise management and rational use of the world’s tropical forests and dedicated to providing a communications network for tropical forestry disciplines.

The NC State Chapter of the International Society of Tropical Foresters is a student-run, non-profit organization that acts in concert with the Office of International Affairs of the College of Natural Resources to enhance the international perspective of forestry studies at NC State University. Its objectives are to:

ISTF meets monthly to hear guest speakers and view slide presentations focusing on some issue in the international arena. Each Spring, ISTF also organizes a field trip to a tropical forest ecosystem. This is usually the capstone academic experience for future professionals in the fields of tropical conservation, forestry and biology.

ISTF in collaboration with The Society of American Foresters is sponsoring a Wiki Encyclopedia. Forests and Forestry in the Americas: An Encyclopedia will have about 300 articles, ranging between 500-4,000 words. There will be a balance of short, medium and long essays, disciplines, regions, and value perspectives of forests. Dr. Fred Cubbage is the editor for the encyclopedia and Dr. Erin Sills is an associate editor. Click here to view the current work-in-progress on the Encyclopedia.

The Society for Ecological Restoration International (SER) is a non-profit organization that includes over 2,000 individuals and organizational members actively engaged in ecologically-sensitive repair and management of ecosystems. Members include scientists, planners, administrators, ecological consultants, first peoples, landscape architects, philosophers, teachers, engineers, natural areas managers, writers, growers, community activists and volunteers, among others.

The Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS) supports sound natural resource management of tropical ecosystems through environmental outreach, environmental policy courses, reforestation research and the protection, investigation and management of buffer areas in field research stations. At the local level, OTS sponsors environmental education for native populations that had proved vital for the long-term protection of natural resources and biodiversity. North Carolina State University is a member of OTS, which means that students are eligible to apply for courses and research funding.

CropBiotech Net is the home of the Global Knowledge Center on Crop Biotechnology (KC). KC is the information-sharing initiative of ISAAA, a not-for-profit organization that delivers the benefits of new agricultural biotechnologies to farmers in developing countries for poverty alleviation.

The Forest Products Society is an international not-for-profit technical association that provides an information network for all segments of the forest products industry. Society members represent public and private research, development, industrial management, production, marketing, education, engineering, sales, supply, and consulting interests.

The International Association for Society and Natural Resources is an interdisciplinary professional association open to individuals from a variety of social science and natural science backgrounds interested in research pertaining to the environment and natural resources.
