FER sponsors a number of on-going extension programs to oversee our continuing education efforts, promote best practices within key industries and disseminate information to the public.

Our Forestry & Environmental Outreach Program (FEOP) offers a variety of courses, workshops, conferences and seminars for forestry and natural resource professionals on both a non-credit and continuing education credit basis. FEOP also educates the general public, professionals, landowners, public and private land managers and provides organized forums for the exchange of information and ideas on natural resource management.
Extension Forestry helps North Carolinians make informed decisions concerning the management, enhancement and enjoyment of their forest resources by providing technical assistance, distributing research-based information and sponsoring educational programs for adults and children. It also offers many other useful resources to North Carolina citizens involved in forestry. Services are provide through N.C.’s 100 County Extension Centers as well as the Cherokee Indian Reservation Center.
Christmas Tree Extension provides consumers with information on tree selection and care as well as environmental issues concerning Christmas tree production. Extension also provides North Carolina Christmas tree growers with educational programs and research-based advice on sustainable Christmas tree production emphasizing protection of the environment.
Wildlife Extension provides citizens with information on wildlife identification, enhancement and damage control plus fisheries and aquatics advice. It also sponsors a variety of environmental education and wildlife protection programs and offers both general information and certification classes in many areas.
Project Learning Tree (PLT) is an award-winning environmental education program designed for teachers and other educators working with students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12. It promotes interdisciplinary instructional activities and provides workshops and in-service programs for teachers, environmental educators and youth leaders.
