Dear Potential Hunter on the Hill Forest,

Thank you for your inquiry regarding hunting on the Hill Demonstration Forest.  This property is managed by the College of Natural Resources at North Carolina State University as a teaching, research, and demonstration Forest.  Hunting is a privilege that is permitted when it does not interfere with these educational activities.

For the 2007-2008 hunting season, hunting permit prices will increase.  As we did last year, the successful applicant will have to pick up their permit in person.

We institute this process to establish a dialogue with you.  This will allow us to explain our management program and to enlist your help to address problems we encounter on the forest.  This includes 4wheeler trespass and unauthorized use of the forest.  We are not asking you to confront others.  We want to establish a communication method with you, an authorized user of the forest.

We will ban horses and other public access during gun season for deer and turkey, except on Sunday, when no hunting is allowed by NC Wildlife Resource Commission regulations.

Here is what the process of obtaining a permit will look like:

  1. The person that wants to purchase a Hill Forest Hunting Permit will obtain an application, fill it out, and send it to address on the application.  Do not send your money at that time.
  2. Provided that we have permits available of the type that you desire, you will receive a letter confirming that a permit is being held for you.  This letter will include a list of available dates and places where you may pick up the permit.
  3. Bring your payment with you when you come to pick up your permit.  At the meeting you will pay for and receive your permit to hunt the Hill Forest.  You will need to present a picture ID and a current NCWRC issued hunting license to pick up your permit.

Hunters should be aware that Hill Forest is utilized by the public for many recreational activities – hiking, horseback riding, fishing, biking, paddling, and bird-watching.  Except for during gun season for deer and turkey, these activities are allowed the same access as hunters.  Please keep that in mind if you encounter other users, please present your pastime in a respectful and civilized manner.  This is especially important if those you encounter do not appreciate your recreational pursuits.

We will schedule permit pickup sessions on Wednesday and Thursday evenings on the Raleigh campus and Saturday mornings at Slocum Camp on the Hill Forest.

Please let me know your questions regarding the application, the conditions, and regulations for hunting on the property.  Thank you.
