This award is given to a tenure-track faculty member from any of NC State’s colleges, jointly by the deans of CALS and CNR.  This prestigious award will recognize exemplary service to Environment and Society through any mechanism(s) of scholarly work.  The most important aspect of a nomination will be demonstration of “impact” (see examples below).  “Service” to environment and society suggests that the impact of the work has contributed directly or indirectly to the improvement of the human and natural world conditions.  The award recognizes work relevant at any scale or geography.

This award focuses, but not exclusively, on mid-career faculty (broadly defined).  It is intended to reward accomplishment, and very importantly, to encourage future work.

Nomination dossiers should include - -

1. Complete resume.

2. Letter of support from department head, dean, associate dean, assistant dean, and/or university officer.

3. Statement from the nominee about the impact of their work and future plans.

4. Two letters of support from outside of NC State attesting to the impact and accomplishment of the nominee’s efforts (the nominee statement and resume can be provided to the outside letter-writers).

Nominations can originate from individual faculty on their own behalf or on behalf of colleagues, or from any level of university administration.  Nomination packets must be submitted to the selection committee via the person writing a letter of support – No. 2 above.

The selection committee will consist of: CALS Dean Johnny Wynne, CNR Dean Robert Brown, NC State Provost Larry Nielsen, a third NCSU College Dean, and another prominant person to be named at a later date.

Nomination dossiers must be received by Monday, September 8 in the Dean’s Office (Robin_Hughes@ncsu.edu) College of Natural Resources, Biltmore Hall (phone 513-0152).

The awardee is provided a chance to briefly address the audience assembled for the “Borlaug Lecture,” a certificate, $1000, a token gift, his or her name and area of service engraved on a university plaque, and over time, awardees will form a special university “club” (to be named) tasked with developing ways to encourage service among others.
